Chardham Yatra :
Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath

Uttarakhand Chardham Yatra is the sacred yatra of - Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath dham. It is very famous shrine Teerth yatra (Tiratha Yatra) for Hindu religion. Millions of devotes over the world visit 4 dham yatra in Uttarakhand, India for the way of salvation (moksha). In hindu religion it was belived that during once in a life should visit these four pilgrimage yatra, which are the main sacred shrine, Yamunotri devoted to Lord Yamuna, Gangotri devoted to Lord Ganga, Kedarnath devoted to Lord (Shiv Shankar Mahadev) and Badrinath devoted to Lord Vishnu.

Yamunotri Temple

The main attraction is the Yamunotri temple dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. The temple was built by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur in the 19th century and is a significant pilgrimage site. The temple opens on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya and closes on Yam Dwitiya (the second day after Diwali).

Pilgrims also visit the Surya Kund, a thermal spring near the temple, where they cook rice and potatoes tied in a cloth. This cooked prasad is then offered to the deity. The Divya Shila, a rock pillar, is also worshipped before entering the temple. Yamunotri is accessible by a trek of about 6 kilometers from the town of Hanuman Chatti. Ponies and palanquins are available for those who prefer not to trek the entire distance. The region around Yamunotri is breathtaking with snow-capped peaks, dense forests, and the Yamuna River flowing through the picturesque landscape. Pilgrims visit Yamunotri as part of the Char Dham Yatra, seeking the blessings of Goddess Yamuna and spiritual purification. It is advisable to check the current weather conditions and plan the journey accordingly, as the region experiences cold temperatures, especially in the early and late months of the pilgrimage season.

Gangotri Temple

The Gangotri temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga and is the main attraction for pilgrims. It is situated at an elevation of about 3,100 meters (10,200 feet) above sea level. The temple was constructed in the 18th century by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gorkha Commander, and later renovated by the Maharaja of Jaipur.

Pilgrims undertake the Gangotri Yatra seeking the blessings of Goddess Ganga and to participate in the spiritual and cultural rituals associated with the holy river. As with any pilgrimage in the Himalayan region, it's important to be prepared for the challenging terrain and varying weather conditions. The Bhagirathi River, known as the Ganga above Devprayag, originates from the Gangotri Glacier, located near the temple. Pilgrims believe that taking a dip in the holy waters of the Bhagirathi River can cleanse them of sins. Gaumukh, meaning "Cow's Mouth," is the terminus of the Gangotri Glacier and is considered the actual source of the Ganga. It is about 18 kilometers from Gangotri and can be reached by trekking. Near the Gangotri temple, there is a submerged natural rock Shivling (a symbolic representation of Lord Shiva), which becomes visible during the winter months when the water level recedes. Gangotri is a base for various treks, including the popular trek to Gaumukh and further to Tapovan, offering stunning views of the surrounding peaks.

Kedarnath Temple

The main attraction is the Kedarnath temple, which is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, considered the holiest representations of Lord Shiva. The temple is believed to have been built by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century and is located near the Mandakini River.

Pilgrims visit Kedarnath to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva and to complete the Char Dham Yatra. Due to its high altitude and challenging terrain, it is advisable to check weather conditions and be well-prepared for the trek. The pilgrimage season is limited to the summer months when the weather is relatively milder. Pilgrims reach Kedarnath by trekking or on horseback from Gaurikund, which is the base camp. The trek is about 16 kilometers and passes through picturesque landscapes, steep paths, and scenic meadows.Near the Kedarnath temple, there is a temple dedicated to Bhairavnath, an incarnation of Lord Shiva, believed to protect the area during harsh weather conditions. A glacial lake named Vasuki Tal is located about 6 kilometers from Kedarnath. It is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and is considered a beautiful trekking destination. The samadhi (final resting place) of Adi Shankaracharya is located behind the Kedarnath temple.According to Hindu mythology, Kedarnath is also associated with the Pandavas from the Mahabharata. It is believed that they sought the blessings of Lord Shiva here to atone for the sins committed during the Kurukshetra War.

Badrinath Temple

The main attraction is the Badrinath temple, which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in the form of Badrinarayan. The temple is situated at an elevation of about 3,133 meters (10,279 feet) above sea level. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams, sacred shrines mentioned in the works of the Alvars, prominent Tamil poet-saints.

Pilgrims visit Badrinath as part of the Char Dham Yatra, seeking the blessings of Lord Vishnu. The temple's location in the scenic Himalayas adds to the spiritual and natural beauty of the pilgrimage. Due to its high altitude, it is advisable to check weather conditions and plan the visit during the summer months when the temple is accessible. Mana Village: Nearby is Mana, the last village before the Indo-China border. It is believed to be the place where the Vedas were composed, and it has various mythological associations. Charan Paduka: It is a rock having an impression of Lord Vishnu's foot, and it is believed to be the spot where Lord Vishnu stepped when he incarnated as Lord Vamana. Brahma Kapal: It is a flat platform on the banks of the Alaknanda River where Hindus perform rituals for their ancestors.
